Some Scan & Go applications can work in combination with Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) to offer an alternative to scanning with a separate handheld device.

ESLs contain an NFC chip which enables the customer to receive the product information through tapping their phone against the shelf. This allows customers to add items to their basket without the possibility of erroneous scans while further removing friction from the purchasing process.

This technology is already in use at some payment terminals that accept payment from mobile devices e.g. ApplePay or GooglePay.
